“To love oneself, is the beginning of a life-long romance.” Oscar Wilde
Ladies, this is a short one! I wanted to put forward the idea that if we are kind to ourselves, we will consistently choose situations that serve and uphold us. We will choose situations and people that build us and expand with us. We will prioritise wellness and longevity. We will learn how to say No to situations that harm, dishonour, de-value, stress and degrade our souls. Over the last couple of years, this has been a principle that I have explored and believe in. I believe that it is my responsibility to protect myself, nurture myself and provide for myself. It is my responsibility to soothe, comfort and validate myself. It is my responsibility to motivate, entertain and care for myself. It is my responsibility to inspire and uplift myself. I am responsible for myself, my feelings and every result I get. Kindness is the choice that I choose to make everyday.
Making this choice everyday has allowed me to prioritise my mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. It allows me to make choices that serve me well both short and long term. What else is a good life but a series of decisions that lead me closer to my highest and best self. Decisions that lead me closer to my purpose in life. Decisions that let me focus on how beautiful and amazing life truly is !
“At every moment you have a choice that either leads you closer to your spirit or further away from it.” -Thich Nhat Hanh
Many definitions of self-kindness focus on the idea of being compassionate to self , accepting imperfection, avoiding unhealthy criticism/judgement of self and managing stress in life. My thoughts for this note is to extend the idea of kindness to the way we experience our lives on a day by day basis. Evaluate your life and check in using these questions:
Am I living with any feelings of discomfort?
If yes, why am I living with these feelings of discomfort?
I would like to put forward the idea that it is an act of unkindness if you are tolerating your own discomfort for factors that can be addressed i.e. relationships , jobs, living circumstances.
Kindness to oneself is building an honest and meaningful connection with self so that you are able to recognise discomfort and make decisions that move you away from discomfort and move you to bliss. If every single day of your life is filled with more blissful moments, who would you be? Who would you become? What dreams could you fulfil? How much pain and suffering can you avoid?
It is a thought ! Try it out and let me know your thoughts ...
“Kindness is universal. Sometimes being kind allows others to see the goodness in humanity through you. Always be kinder than necessary.” – Germany Kent
